The adventures of an Air Force spouse

I’m having a pity party. Want to join me?

The Good Chaplain tries on his "battle rattle" before leaving. I hope he never needs it!

I’m having a pity party today and you are all welcome to join me. But let me first warn you — it is for one day only!

I am the wife of an Air Force Chaplain. My husband, Dave, who from here on out will be referred to as the “Good Chaplain,” left this afternoon for a seven-month deployment to Africa. Thus the pity party.

Since this isn’t the first time he’s left for a while, I am allowing myself one day of pity before life begins again. The main thing making this deployment so difficult is my twin girls are out of the house. So it’s me and the animals. the Twizzlers I devoured after dropping the Good Chaplain off at the airport, helped kick off the pity party.

The first time the Good Chaplain left, he wasn’t even a chaplain yet. He was a chaplain candidate and he went to New Hampshire for the summer, leaving me with two 1 1/2 year olds. I learned the first of my many lessons that while the military member is gone, everything goes to hell in a handbasket, as they say. If it’s going to break or the kids are going to be sick or the dog is going to die — it will happen while the military member is gone.

I’ve learned a lot of those kinds of lessons over the 23 years in the Air Force and in the next several months, I will share them and some funny stories along the way.

Next time: The story of Gigi.

  1. I think it is expensive to fly from Fort Myers to OK City, but I may do it anyway. Seven months is a long time and I could come for a weekend.

  2. Hello Chappywife!
Maybe you could come on down to Dallas tomorrow for the PWOCI conference– would love to see you, and that would take up the first weekend of his deployment!Luv ya, Mary

    • Mary, actually I will be in Houston this weekend. Initially we were not sure when he was leaving so I did not sign up for the conference. Now a friend has asked me to watch her two children while she attends a conference in Houston so I am going to tag along with her.

      Thanks for the comment.

  3. Thank you for your site. I am currently having a pity party of my own at this moment and stumbled upon your site. My husband is not a Chaplian yet either and he just left for the summer as a Chaplian Candidate. I look forward to reading more about your experience.

    • Thank you Kendra. Is your husband an Air Force Chaplain? Where is he doing his chaplain candidacy? I hope you are encouraged and enjoy my blog. Let me know if you have any questions about military life.
